About Clickers

Using clickers is really fun, but not fun if you ever break one. I hope nobody breaks one of the clickers. We use clickers for vocabulary, spelling, and for warm-up in math. Sometimes we get a 100% in warm-up and get a candy worm. So far we had a man come to our class and teach us how to use clickers. He taught us to take our time and make sure our answer is correct the way it is supposed to be. He also told us to name the mobi. Some of us choose a lot of different names. He also told us what the button means on the clickers. I hope we all have fun with the clickers!

What we did This Week

Welcome readers this class. Miss Johnson is reading a book called Things Not Seen. It’s about a boy named Bobby who is invisible, but you can't touch him, like the Invisible man. He told his mom and dad and they freaked out. We have a device called a clicker. We put our answers in it and Miss Johnson gives us our grade. It’s kind of like texting. It’s really fun. The heritage project is due two Mondays from now. We took our Plato test in computers, which helps us in math. We played soccer in P.E. on Thursday.

Heritage Inquiry

During each Reading unit, we work on an Inquiry project. Our first unit has been Heritage. Each story we have read has shown us how heritage has influenced someone's life. That is our big idea---How our heritage has influenced our lives. I have given each student the assignment to find someone in their family that they can interview and ask questions about their heritage. This individual needs to be someone considerably older than them (like a grandparent). We are nearing the end of our unit, so I just want to remind everyone that they need to be getting this done. They can have help writing down what they are told, and just need to bring that information to school by October 4th. We have a really neat little book that we are going to make. If it is possible they also need to bring a 4 x 6 (or smaller picture) in landscape mode of the person that they've interviewed. If you have any questions, please call and let me know.

This week in class

This morning we learned to type faster in computers. In P.E on Thursday we will play soccer, I hope it will be fun . Maybe we can finish Frindle today, I bet we will. I don’t know what we are doing in library tomorrow, but I hope it won’t be boring. We are doing a Science thing with the college students from CSI . We did finish Frindle. Now we are reading Things Not Seen ,  it sounds  interesting . Hopefully Friday afternoon will be fun. Now we will have do a job, This week  Alex M., Nicky, Aishya, Ramsey, and Alex B. have to do it.

You've got to love these kids---maybe I can clarify a little of what all of this means. I assure you, we do more than just go to prep, but that seems to be what the kids all love. This week, the story we read was about a Japanese girl who was sent to live in an internment camp  in Delta, Utah during World War II. We found it very interesting that there was an internment camp for Japanese Americans close to where we live. A professor from CSI came to do extra Science with the school today. Everyone thought it was pretty cool when he made the balloon burst into flames. It's been a good week

Which dish soap makes the biggest bubbles?

This week we have been reviewing the scientific method. We've talked about how each step is important and what we need to do for each step. On Thursday, we decided to see which dish soap makes the biggest bubbles. We had Dawn, Joy, and Palmolive. The students got to make mess of their desks, and blow bubbles with the dish soap solution. We had some students who were very good at blowing bubbles with their straws, several of the bubbles were 12 inches in diameter. I think they had a lot of fun---and which dish soap makes the biggest bubbles??? We decided a lot may depend on the person blowing the bubble.

Back To School Night!

Well it’s the third week of school and it’s going great. Today is September 8, 2010 tonight it’s Back to School Night. Everybody’s so excited. I hope we have a great time. I heard that they are doing a rocket launch. It should be fun. On Monday we were not in school because it was Labor Day. Tuesday we had music. We practiced our song for Veterans Day. It’s about the military and when they come home. Today we had a librarian named Danny. He does well. Tomorrow we are going to play flag football (as far as I’m concerned). We are reading Frindle!!! It’s real good as you may have heard last week. This week we read farther into the book and we’re getting towards the end of it. It’s interesting and ……. that’s about it. Thanks for reading our blog.

Second Week of School

So far we have had a great time in Miss Johnson’s class. This is the first post from the kids in the class, so it might a little rough .This post is going to be about this week. To start off, Miss Johnson is starting to read us the book Frindle. For those you have not read this book, in the 5th grade picture a kid and all his friends tell all the fifth graders to hold up a pen and say FRINDLE! The book is really good. On Monday we went to computers and started to make a slide show about ourselves. We have to have at least 6 slides. We need to animate all of our slides. On Tuesday we got to play instruments in music. We played a train song in music. We used drums, a bell, maracas, and xylophones. We also sang a lot of songs. It was a little boring. It could have been better. On Wednesday we went to Library. We put books away for our librarian. We each checked out two books to take home or for class. On Thursday we went to P.E. and played flag football. All the girls and boys were divided into four groups. There was a red girl team and a red boy team. There was a yellow boy team and a yellow girl team. Then the two groups of boys played each other. And the two girl teams played each other. After both games were over we added up the yellow girl team and the yellow boy team. The both yellow teams combined score was six touchdowns. The two red teams combined score was three touchdowns. Both teams had so much fun. After Flag football we went inside and got a drink. We had a little time left so we played murder in the dark. Mrs. Shaff, The P.E. teacher, was the murderer. She got about five people out. After that we went back to our class and started to type this because it was due on Thursday. We have had a lot of fun doing this post. This is a little of what we did this week.
